Great Quotes for Coaches Podcast

The Man in the Arena

Scott Rosberg Season 7 Episode 191

Today we move on from our series on Perfectionism and begin a new journey. While it won't be an actual series, over the next few episodes (maybe 4, but maybe more!), I will be talking about quotes that I will be using with my varsity boys' basketball team over the course of our season. As I type that, I realize that this could be a 4-month endeavor, rather than a 4-episode endeavor!

What I plan on doing is talking about the quotes I will be talking about with my team over the season. The quotes will be based on the Core Covenants that our team has come up with that we feel will establish the identity that we are seeking for our team. I will tell you what our covenants are next week, and I will begin with a quote or a few quotes on the first covenant. I will then continue in that vein throughout the season.

Today, though, I start with a quote that I will be using in a foundational way with our team. I talked about this quote a bit when I was dong quotes on perfectionism by Dr. Brene Brown from her book "Daring Greatly." However, over the course of the first 190 episodes of this podcast, I don't remember ever talking about the entire quote from Teddy Roosevelt from which Brene Brown got that title for her book.

The quote is often called, "The Man in the Arena." It is one of the all-time great quotes for those of us in leadership roles, and it is a great way to kick off these episodes I will be doing on my team's Core Covenants. Enjoy!
