Wooden - Pyramid - Poise
Show Notes

Today we continue the series discussing the building blocks of John Wooden's "Pyramid of Success" and a variety of quotes in support of them. We are into block #13, and it's the first of the two blocks on the fourth tier of the pyramid (or the second tier from the top). This one is devoted to the concept of Poise.

Wooden said that the two blocks on this tier are there because all of the other blocks lead to them. If you do not take care of each of the other 12 blocks below them, it will be very hard for you to have success with these two.

When we think of Poise, we normally think of self-control (Block # 6 in the Pyramid), a calm demeanor, and maintaining a level of composure necessary for the moment. Those are all part of Poise. But Wooden looks at poise in one other way. He says that poise is basically you just being yourself. When we maintain our dignity with respect to being true to ourselves, we have poise. We are not acting, faking, or pretending. We are who we are supposed to be, and we handle ourselves accordingly.

You will hear four quotes in today's episode. They talk about poise from the usual way we think of poise, but you will see them also fitting in nicely with Wooden's concept of just being yourself.
